Mt Haruna: where fiction meets reality July 30th, 2017 - Samuel Parra Coolest places often do not appear on travel guides. Being my third time in Japan, this time I wanted to explore some places which are difficult to get to using public transport, and in one of my day trips I ended up in Gunma prefecture, about 65 miles northwest from Tokyo.

Situated 30 minutes by car from Shibukawa, Mount Haruna is one of the famous mountains in the Gunma prefecture. Mount Haruna is a place I like to go often. As I live not far away from there, I can definitely say that the best season to go is during the fall.

Trekking at Mt.Haruna (榛名山ハイキング) is one of the easy and beautiful hiking you can enjoy around Tokyo. Mt. Haruna is located in the middle of Gunma Prefecture. It is the name of the mountains surrounding Lake Haruna. It has beautiful Autumn leaves around the end of October.This hiking takes about 4 hours and has a stunning view.

A 20-minute drive from Lake Haruna, Haruna Shrine is another popular tourist spot for its amazingly built architecture and landscape. Because the trio are so close to each other, you can visit all three of them in one day! The best route for the day is to visit Haruna Shrine in the early morning to avoid the crowds.
