Porcupine Gorge National Park is located in Outback Queensland, about 60km north of the town of Hughenden.Covering an area of 5410ha, Porcupine Gorge National Park extends some 25kms along Porcupine Creek and spreads out to surrounding open woodland and grassland. The creek has carved a breathtaking canyon that reveals layers of sedimentary rocks spanning hundreds of millions of years.

Although it resembles a porcupine or hedgehog, closer inspection of the echidna reveals some of the animal's more unusual traits. Echidnas are monotremes, or mammals that lay eggs. They have a lower body temperature than other mammals, maintaining temperatures around 31-32° C (87.8-89.6° F).

The North American porcupine ( Erethizon dorsatum) is the largest in the family, usually weighing less than 7 kg (15.4 pounds), though males occasionally grow significantly larger. Its body is up to 80 cm (31 inches) long, with a tail up to 30 cm (12 inches). Both are covered with a total of 30,000 or more hollow quills.

Sometimes called the porcupine of Australia, they're not directly related. Echidnas as small mammals weighing between 3.5-9kg, with either a short or long snout dependent on the sub species. Due to their small size and slow speed, the echidna protects itself by either hiding, or curling into a ball being protected by their spikey exterior.

They are very different to a porcupine - porcupines are actually rodents whereas the echidna is an ancient type of marsupial. Additionally, echidna cannot eject their spines, whereas a porcupine can. Echidnas are found all over Australia, including Tasmania. They have adapted to thrive in many harsh, Australian environments.

Young are born relatively well-developed, with their eyes open and teeth present. They have soft quills and spines at birth (most likely to ease the birthing process) but they quickly harden in the air. The young grow rapidly, reaching full size in about a year. ( Nowak, 1999; Smithers, 1983; Storch, 1990)
